The First Thing You Need To Do

Before you can do any fancy stuff with your laptop there are a few things you need to do. This is called the 'Startup Repair Hack'. So yes, I am copy pasting this from this site but I am changing a few details.

- Log on as usual and then shut down by holding the power button for several seconds.
1. Press the power button to turn on your computer.
2. While your on the screen with the animated Microsoft logo press and hold the power button until it turns off.
3. Press the power button to turn on again.
- As soon as it starts to turn on, repeatedly spam the F8 button on the 2013 laptops. Don't forget to still do the previous steps though.
4. You should now see the option to launch Start Up Repair/Repair Your Computer. Select the option and press enter.
5. Run Startup Repair.
6. You should see a blue bar that moves across the screen repeatedly. Above it should be messages that say 'searching for problems' or something.
7. The message should change to 'Attempting repairs' within a few minutes.
8. Leave the computer running. This message should be there for 10-40 minutes depending on your computer.
9. After 10-40 minutes a message should pop up that says 'start up repair could not fix the problem'. Click the arrow next to 'show problem details'.
10. Scroll to the bottom and click the link to the .txt file.
11. Notepad should open up with the file.
12. In notepad click File > Open.
13. You can now use the file browser to perform the hack.
14. Go to C:\Windows\system32 and find osk.exe and rename it to osk2.exe or something easy to remember.
- You may have to type in the path manually.
- You have to change the last option to "all formats/files" or something along those lines to see the .exe files.
15. Copy paste the cmd.exe and rename the copied file to osk.exe
16. Restart the computer and at the login screen and open the the accessibility button at the bottom left hand corner and click the On Screen Keyboard. This should open the Command Prompt.

From here, you can do all the other stuff. The most common way is to change yourself into an administrator. I find that, that would probably not be the safest way. I will show you how to turn off particular things without having to become an administrator. You can do anything from the Command Prompt.

To reverse, simply do the whole process again and delete osk.exe and rename osk2.exe back to osk.exe.
You shouldn't have to reverse this though as it won't be noticed during IT checks.

Share this with all your friends and I'll love you forever. Spread the love so that everyone's happy. Donate if you can and please support this blog.

    2. Yea but how do you unblock any websites on a school chomebook ????

      Delete
    3. There is a proxy script which unblocks all 'student blocked' websites (like YouTube). i have been using this script since year 4 in primary school.

In order to unblock 'student blocked' websites you need to go to your chrome settings chrome://settings and go down to advanced settings. Once there you need to find proxy settings. Open that and click LAN settings. De-activate the top 2 tick boxes and activate the bottom 2 tick boxes under proxy server make sure you tick 'bypass proxy for local address'. now in the address bar type 'edupass' and in the port type '8080' (this works in australia you might need to go to hidemyass.com to get your port address). after that is done you should be able to bypass all student blocks. if you are using a laptop which you take home make sure you de-activate the bottom tick box's in order to use your internet at home.

Note: This Does NOT Bypass Netspace.

    1. Hi there, which laptop do you have? You can drop me an email or just reply to this comment. If you logged on as usual and then shut down by holding the power button for several seconds and then remembered to spam F8 as soon as you turn the laptop on, you shouldn't have this issue. Maybe try it again? If it doesn't work, you can email me.

    1. You have to open the osk from the logon screen! Just check that the second cmd is named osk.exe and that the second osk is named osk2.exe. If those don't work, drop me an email with more details and I'll see what I can do!

  11. I dont quite understand what you mean you say copy and past the cmd.exe?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. After you click File>Open, you are only viewing the text files. If you look near the bottom, you can click where is says "x files only" (or something along those lines) and then there should be an option to "Show all Files." Then you find the cmd.exe file and right click it. Then you should see the option to copy it. Then you paste it in that same folder. After you rename it, what you've done is tricked the laptop into opening the cmd.exe when you click on the On Screen Keyboard from the lockscreen.

  18. Do you have a method for 2012 green laptops? Both of those don't work for mine. It doesn't list Start-up/Repair in the selectable options.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This method should work fine on the green laptops. If not, I recommend trying it again until it does. Sometimes it takes a few goes. However it is possible the DET have updated the software to block this method.

  19. No longer works with the latest DET Image

    ReplyDelete

    1. Indeed, it seems as though this no longer works for some people. However, sometimes if you do this hack multiple times, it ends up working. It is possible the DET have blocked this method.

  20. can someone update the tutorial as the new image is preventing all of this from working

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry, I don't know any other methods. The new image might be overriden if the hack is done multiple times. But yes, it's possible that the new image prevents it completely.

      Delete
  21. This won't work anymore as everytime you open up an application or install/uninstall it, it will pop up the administrator username and password window and you have to enter it to get passed it. I think the DET patched this up so we won't be able to do much if our laptops are administrator as it will pop up the admin username and password window. Do you have any methods or instructions in bypassing this?

    1. Hi, the only way I know how to override this is to use portable apps. If you Google search "portable apps" then a plethora of options should be available to you.
